Our stand was based in the Windsor Hall (W83) and proved popular with those of you keen to see innovation and quality put into practice.

It’s no surprise that our range of plastic sackholders were a draw for many because of the durability and functionality of the design. Also causing a stir were our space saving duo hospital bins which enable two waste streams to be collected simultaneously. Our magnetic labels which can be used to distinguish which waste should go where or to brand our bins with your logo were also well-liked.

In February 2010 a waste audit was carried out across the Trust. The findings showed many wards and departments didn’t have enough domestic waste bins, meaning too much rubbish was being put into clinical waste sackholders. The figures speak for themselves, with 47 tonnes of orange-bagged clinical waste being produced, compared to 21 tonnes of black-bagged waste.

Thanks to the introduction of the duo sackholders things were quickly turned around. The bin collects two waste streams but only takes up the space of one unit. The sackholder makes it quick and easy to dispose of rubbish in the right way.

When another audit was undertaken in February 2011, the amount of domestic waste collected overtook clinical waste, with 48 tonnes put into black-lidded bins. This results in a significant saving of £6,750 a month for the Trust.

Sally Ludditt, health, safety and environmental advisor says: “It’s much cheaper for us to dispose of black bagged domestic waste, £73 per tonnes compared to £330 per tonne of orange bagged clinical waste. We’re saving more than £250 for every additional tonne of waste that staff put into a black bag rather than an orange one.”

To put this into context…a 500 bed hospital with 500 bins would make a yearly saving of £62,500.

It’s neither completely metal nor completely polythene. It’s actually a fusion of both.

The Hybrid’s polythene foot unit gives you the benefit of being wet room proof whilst also not marking floors or walls. Conversely having a plastisol (plastic coated steel) body and a steel lid meabs they are fire retardant.

From those comments we set about designing the hybrid to encompass the best bits from two of our most popular sackholders. This is the result and it’s something I’m extremely proud of.”

We’ve already taken the product out into the market and have been getting great initial feedback. Waste managers and facilities managers alike at the AHCP exhibition in Telford were impressed with the aesthetics and functionality. The stand out message is it fits the bill because it is easy to clean, fire proof and matches the appearance of the existing range of Wybone sackholders.

As with all Wybone’s sackholders it comes with our anti-bacterial coating Bactiban as standard, which helps prevent the spread of infection. Adding a hands free lid will also decrease the risk of germs being spread because the sackholder cannot be opened by hand but only by using the foot pedal.

The unit is fire retardant and meets all NHS legislation on fire safety.

The frame, foot unit and lid are all colour coded, and all standard waste segregation colours are available.

Magnetic labels are available for sticking to the lid of the sackholder - these can show the waste streams to make it clear what waste should be placed in which bin.  The benefit of magnetic labels is that they can be lifted off easily and cleaned thoroughly and easily.
