89% of local authorities were aware of discarded needles in their area in the last three years.

The number of discarded needles is on the increase: 34% of local authorities found in excess of 20 needles in 1998 in comparison to 55% and 75% of authorities in 1999 and 2000 respectfully.

Overall, in the UK, discarded needles were most commonly found in parks and playing fields. Our range of needles can reduce both the public’s and local authority staff exposure to the risk of needlestick injuries. Field trials concluded that drug users do actively use the on-street units, however this is based on co-operation from the police and council.

These trials placed units in a specific area or a park where drug users would normally congregate. Due to no intervention from the police, drug users regularly used the same location, therefore localising any problems. It was generally found that the unit was frequently used and was not vandalised.
